Conjuring Boundaries: Inferring Past Identities from Religious Artifacts
نویسنده
چکیده
A detailed examination of commonalities between folk religion beliefs and practices of African American and European American ethnic groups raises intriguing issues. Interpretations concerning the ethnic group association of conjuration artifacts uncovered at eighteenthand nineteenth-century sites in the mid-Atlantic region must be based on a clearer articulation of the interplay of three issues: the general dynamics of ethnic group boundedness; how material culture communicates such ethnic identities; and how conjuration practices support or subvert ethnic group boundaries. A variety of protective and malevolent conjuration practices likely functioned in different ways in intergroup and intragroup settings.

Group Identity, Individual Creativity, and Symbolic Generation in a BaKongo Diaspora
This article applies theories of group dynamics and individual agency to past material expressions of core symbols within particular African American religious beliefs. The past creation and use of such artifacts is analyzed using theories concerning modes of symbolic expression, the interplay of dominant and nondominant religions, formation and maintenance of social group identities, and the r...

Existing research on religious identity, especially from a narrative perspective, has tended to focus either on accounts of the past (especially occasions of religious change) or on conceptions of religious identity in the present. Religious communities, however, not only provide a sense of identity and belonging in the present—as a “Catholic” or “Buddhist,” for example—they also promote a part...
متن کاملCombinatorial identities associated with CFTP
We explore a method of obtaining combinatorial identities by analysing partially-completed runs of the Coupling from the Past (CFTP) algorithm. In particular, using CFTP for simple symmetric random walk (ssrw) with holding boundaries, we derive an identity involving linear combinations of Cab(s) for different a and b, where Cab(s) is the probability that unconstrained ssrw run from 0 for time n...

Social identity is a constant and permanent process that changes social situations based on individual experiences in these situations. Religious and ethnic identities are two dimensions of social identity that are of great importance in Iranian society. Due to the ethnic diversity in Iran and the proximity of ethnic cultures through migration, ethnic identity is noticeable. Religious identity ...
متن کاملTransforming Personal Artifacts into Probabilistic Narratives
An approach focused on inferring probabilistic narratives from personal artifacts (including photographs) is presented in this work using personal photos metadata (timestamp, location, and camera parameters), formal event models, mobile device connectivity, external data sources and web services. We introduce plausibility measure — the occurrence-likelihood of an event node in the output graph....
